Option 1: Illustrates the optimized streaming scenario based on this fact. In this illustration, the source is being encoded in multiple formats and delivered at various target bitrates. Typical encodes like Figure 1 represent 2-3 content types: Real, Windows Media and QuickTime. This is done while also recognizing the diversity in connectivity speeds by delivering multiple data rates, generally 2-5.

The streaming server then maintains which included bitrate stream is most appropriate for a given view based on connectivity speeds.
